Oppose Sports: Joy Reid Critics Black People in Renee Good's Case
The Gloves Are Off: Joy Reid Takes on Stephen A. Smith in a Scathing RebukeIn the world of sports and politics, few personalities are as polarizing as Stephen A. Smith. The ESPN personality has made a name for himself with his outspoken views, but lately, he's been facing intense scrutiny from prominent Black women who've called him out for his comments on various issues. Joy Reid, a renowned journalist and MSNBC alumna, is the latest to join the fray, delivering a scathing rebuke of Smith that's left many in the media world talking.
The controversy began when Smith appeared on ABC's "Linsey Davis" show, where he discussed his thoughts on politics and his interactions with prominent Black women. Reid took issue with Smith's comments, particularly those directed at her and Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett. In a Substack live show, Reid fired back at Smith, pointing out the hypocrisy in his statements.
Reid began by highlighting Smith's failure to answer Davis' question directly, instead resorting to his signature "I respect these women" schtick before launching into attacks on Crockett and herself. She also disputed Smith's claim that her MSNBC show's ratings had dropped 47%, stating that they were actually increasing at the time she left the network.
But Reid didn't stop there. She replayed a series of clips showcasing Smith's past comments on notable Black individuals, including Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, LeBron James, and Colin Kaepernick. Her point was clear: Smith has a history of criticizing prominent Black people, but when it comes to his own criticisms of the right, he's eerily silent.
Reid then turned her attention to Smith's comments on the shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. In a stunning display of audacity, Smith claimed that from a "lawful perspective," the shooting was justified. Reid shot back with a simple yet devastating phrase: "Stick to sports." Her message was clear: Smith has no business commenting on complex issues like police brutality when he's shown such blatant disregard for Black lives.
But what makes Reid's rebuke so powerful is her acknowledgment of the historical context that has allowed figures like Smith to thrive. She pointed out that without the activism and agitation of Black men and women, there would be no President Obama, no First Lady Michelle Obama, and no platform for Smith himself. It's a poignant reminder that our freedom to speak out comes at the expense of those who fought tirelessly for it.
Reid concluded her remarks with a warning: "When the unspicy whites are done with you... You may not have a home in Black America to come home to." The message is clear: Smith's actions will ultimately be his own undoing. As Reid so eloquently put it, "It's a pity you have that big ol' platform, which I sure hope your loud, dumbass takes don't jeopardize from your day job, brah."
In the world of sports and politics, few personalities are as divisive as Stephen A. Smith. But with Joy Reid's scathing rebuke, it's clear that some lines simply cannot be crossed. As we move forward in this complex landscape, one thing is certain: the gloves are off, and the conversation has only just begun.
