Maia Campbell Celebrates Six Years of Sobriety and Growth
Actress Maia Campbell has been open about her struggles with addiction and bipolar disorder, but she's now celebrating a major milestone - six years of sobriety. In an inspiring interview, Campbell shares her journey and the lessons she's learned along the way.A Journey of Self-Discovery
Campbell's struggles with addiction began to surface several years ago, but it wasn't until she hit rock bottom that she realized she needed help. She credits her co-star LL Cool J for trying to intervene and offer support, but ultimately, Campbell knew she had to take control of her own recovery. 'I was doing the most, I was getting lit, I was doing too much,' she recalls. 'I don't wanna trigger anyone by saying what I was doing, because I want to be that leader that leads by example and leaves that mark of example.'
Finding Inspiration in Her Journey
Campbell's journey has been marked by moments of triumph and struggle. She credits her mother, author Bebe Moore Campbell, with inspiring her through her book '72 Hour Hold', which explores the Black experience with mental health. Campbell also reflects on her time on the show 'Iyanla: Fix My Life', where she opened up about her struggles with bipolar disorder. 'You've seen me at the gas station, you've seen me messing up my life with bad choices,' she admits. 'I was in the element trying to prove to people I was just like them as opposed to being the leader I was supposed to be.'
A New Chapter of Growth and Learning
Today, Campbell is celebrating six years of sobriety and growth. She's returned to school at Spelman College to study theater and African-American history, and she's working on a new manuscript that was inspired by her experiences in a facility where portions of it were eventually published. 'I just leave it up to God,' she says of her journey. 'I don't want to be defined by my struggles, but I do want to use them as an opportunity for growth and learning.'
Maia Campbell's story is a powerful reminder that recovery is possible, no matter how dark things may seem. With six years of sobriety under her belt, she's now inspiring others with her journey and showing the world what it means to truly live in the moment.
