A Legacy Born in 1946
It all began in 1946 when Vacuum Foods Corp. became the first U.S. company to ship frozen orange juice across the country. They named their product Minute Maid, and it quickly gained popularity as a convenient way for consumers to enjoy fresh-tasting orange juice without the hassle of squeezing oranges themselves. The brand's success was so great that Coca-Cola acquired Minute Maid in 1960, and by the early 1970s, they had introduced ready-to-drink orange juice, which revolutionized the market once again.

A Shift in Consumer Preferences
However, over the years, consumer preferences have shifted towards fresher, more natural products. The rise of energy drinks and protein smoothies has led to a decline in sales for frozen beverages, including Minute Maid's frozen juice concentrates. Additionally, skyrocketing prices due to poor weather conditions in Brazil and Florida haven't helped, with a 12-ounce can of frozen orange juice costing an average of $4.82 in December, up 13% from the prior year.

A New Era for Minute Maid
In response to these changes, The Coca-Cola Co. has decided to discontinue their frozen products and exit the frozen can category altogether. While this may be a sad day for fans of the classic frozen juice concentrates, it's also an opportunity for Minute Maid to focus on what consumers want most: fresh, high-quality juices with no added sugars. As part of this shift, Minute Maid has already launched Zero Sugar versions of their fresh juices in 2020.

As we bid farewell to a beloved morning staple, it's clear that the beverage industry is evolving at an incredible pace. With consumers increasingly seeking out fresher, more natural products, companies like Minute Maid are adapting to meet these changing demands. While it may be hard to let go of the convenience and nostalgia of frozen juice concentrates, we can't help but feel excited about what the future holds for this iconic brand.
