GLAAD's 2026 EMEI Cohort Champions Black Queer Visual Artists

EXCLUSIVE: GLAAD’s 2026 EMEI cohort champions Black queer visual artistsIn a groundbreaking move, GLAAD has announced its third cohort of the Equity in Media & Entertainment Initiative (EMEI), shining a spotlight on Black queer visual artists who are redefining American art. With $10,000 grants and mentorship opportunities, these 20 talented creatives are poised to make their mark on the industry.

A New Era of Representation
GLAAD's EMEI initiative has been making waves since its launch in 2022, addressing systemic inequities that have long limited opportunities for LGBTQ+ creatives of color. This year's cohort centers on visual artists, but past cohorts have highlighted filmmakers and musicians, demonstrating the organization's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Meet the Cohort
The 20 selected artists hail from various cities across the country, including Brooklyn, New York; Los Angeles, California; and Atlanta, Georgia. They include painters, photographers, sculptors, mixed-media innovators, and digital storytellers who are pushing past industry gatekeeping with their unapologetic artistry.

A Platform for Growth
In addition to the $10,000 grants, each artist will receive mentorship, professional development, and direct access to leaders across the art, media, and entertainment industries. This comprehensive support system is designed to ensure that creatives get visibility and support in a time when representation is both demanded and resisted.

A Future Shaped by Black Queer Artists
As GLAAD's Vice President of Community and Media, DaShawn Usher, notes, 'These artists are unapologetically shaping the future of visual culture.' With their unique perspectives and talents, they are expanding the boundaries of what American art looks like. As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize that representation is not just a matter of numbers, but also of quality and impact.

GLAAD's 2026 EMEI cohort is a testament to the power of diversity and inclusion in shaping the future of media and entertainment. By supporting Black queer visual artists, we are not only expanding representation but also creating a more vibrant and imaginative cultural landscape. As these talented creatives take center stage, we can't help but wonder what's next for this remarkable group of innovators.
