Mary Slessor, the famous Scottish missionary often called "the Mother of All," died in Nigeria on January 13, 1915, at the age of 66.
The reason for her death was primarily a severe, recurrent bout of Malaria, combined with general physical exhaustion from nearly 40 years of grueling work in the tropical climate of south-eastern Nigeria.
Here is why she stayed in Nigeria until her final breath:
1. The Cause of Death
Mary Slessor suffered from many tropical diseases throughout her life, especially malaria. In early January 1915, while at a remote station in Use Ikot Oku (in present-day Akwa Ibom State), she contracted a particularly violent fever.
Physical Toll: Years of living in a mud hut, eating local food, and walking barefoot through the bush had weakened her immune system.
Final Moments: She died just before dawn, surrounded by her adopted Nigerian children
